Where Reeve Waud Spends His Time Outside Private Equity

Running a private equity firm with $4.6 billion under management leaves little room for extra commitments. Reeve Waud has found it anyway. Across Chicago’s civic, cultural, and healthcare institutions, Waud holds board seats and leadership roles that reflect interests well beyond deal-making.

His involvement at the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the more visible commitments. Waud serves as a trustee of the museum and sits on both its Finance Committee and Photography Committee. For an institution that manages a billion-dollar-plus endowment, the finance role carries real fiduciary responsibility.

Healthcare Governance Off the Clock

At Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, one of the country’s top-ranked hospital systems, Waud sits on the finance committee and serves as a board member of the Northwestern Memorial Foundation. It’s a seat that puts him at the intersection of two domains he knows well: finance and healthcare. Waud Capital Partners has built much of its portfolio around healthcare services, from Acadia Healthcare to GI Alliance to Center for Vein Restoration.

The parallel between his investment work and his nonprofit board service isn’t hard to see. Waud Capital invests in healthcare businesses that treat patients. Northwestern Memorial is a nonprofit hospital system that does the same, just without the private equity wrapper.

Civic and Public Service

Reeve Waud holds the position of First Vice Chair for Programs at the Economic Club of Chicago, where he helps shape the speaker lineup and event programming for one of the city’s most prominent business organizations. Past speakers at the Economic Club have included sitting presidents, Federal Reserve chairs, and Fortune 500 CEOs.

He has also served on the board of Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, contributed to the Illinois State Police Merit Board, which oversees hiring and promotions within the state police, and sat on the board of trustees at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. Waud and his wife, Melissa, have additionally supported Friends of Acadia, a nonprofit focused on conservation at Acadia National Park in Maine.

Range Over Specialization

The breadth of Reeve Waud’s board commitments runs from arts patronage to law enforcement oversight to hospital governance. That range suggests an approach to civic life – one that mirrors his investment philosophy at Waud Capital Partners: find areas where experience and capital can compound, then stay involved long enough to matter.

Most of these roles are unpaid. None generate deal flow directly. But they anchor Waud in communities and institutions that operate on time horizons longer than a typical fund cycle. That’s exactly the kind of thinking he has applied to Acadia Healthcare, where he still serves as chairman more than two decades after founding the company.
